The Best Way to Learn the Spanish Language

Exploring the best ways to learn Spanish from the point of view of three different students.

The best way to learn how to speak Spanish is easy – it’s whatever the best way is for you to learn Spanish, not the way someone else learns. Different people learn in different ways, so be sure to choose the teaching method that suits your learning style. Once you solve that learning style problem, learning how and when to study can be easy.

Let’s look at three learning styles of three different Spanish language pupils: Francesca, Don, and Dolores.

Classroom Style

Francesca wants to learn how to speak Spanish for an upcoming vacation in Mexico. She likes to learn in a traditional classroom setting, with an instructor teaching a group of students. She doesn’t have a college degree, but she have taken many college classes because that’s the way she learns. The best way for Francesca to learn Spanish is to enroll in an adult education Spanish class where she can get the organized instruction that helps her learn.

Independent Study

Don is a contractor who wants to learn how to speak Spanish so he can communicate with all of his workers. Don is a big fan of independent study. Don is too busy to go to school and sit in a classroom, and his schedule is too hectic to guarantee that he will be able to make it to class. Don has no way of knowing where he’ll be next Tuesday and Thursday, so it is no wonder he is unwilling to commit to Thursday afternoon Spanish classes.

learn spanish on line

The best way for Don to learn Spanish is on his own. He can get Spanish language CDs that he can listen to in his car. By listening to the spoken phrases and repeating them aloud, Don will learn Spanish using his own learning style at his own pace.

Immersion

Dolores is a grandmother who wants to learn how to speak Spanish so she can do volunteer work with immigrant children. She learns by doing, so the best way for Dolores to learn to speak Spanish is to immerse herself in the language as it is spoken by natives.

One easy way for Dolores to learn Spanish is for her to watch Spanish language soap operas, or telenovellas on Spanish-speaking cable or satellite TV stations. Destinos is one popular telenovella. Characters on Destinos speak slowly and clearly and use lots of dramatic hand gestures that will help Dolores figure out what’s going on.

Whatever your learning style is, the best way for you to learn Spanish is the way that works for you.

Speak Spanish Quickly

Would you like to speak Spanish quickly? Follow this five-step plan.

If you want to speak Spanish quickly, here is your plan:

1. Get a Spanish Lesson Book

Buy a book that focuses on phrases that you can use to start speaking right away. You will need to learn grammar, of course, but the finer points can wait. First learn to communicate in the most basic ways. Know how to say hello and to ask where things are.

This is the natural way to learn, by the way. A baby knows how to communicate long before he knows what it means to conjugate a verb, right? If you are more interested in actually communicating than in analyzing the structure of the language, start with the simple Spanish phrases that you need.

2. Learn The Phrases That Make Everyone Your Teacher

There are some basic phrases that will get the native speakers to be your teachers. Learning these is essential if you want to learn to speak Spanish quickly.

For example, "Cmo se dice…" (How do you say…), and "Cul es la palabra para esto?" (What is the word for this?) are great phrases to know. You can say "Cul es la palabra para esto?" and point at something. If the person you’re speaking to knows a little English, you can say, for example, "Cmo se dice, ‘breakfast’ en espaol?"

Another good phrase to know is "Por favor, habla mas despacio." (Please, speak more slowly.) One that you’ll use often: "Yo no entiendo." (I don’t understand.) It is also very useful to know the phrase "Cmo se escribe?" (How do you write it?)

People are generally very tolerant, and love to help you learn Spanish. Knowing these kinds of key phrases lets any Spanish speaker become your teacher.

3. Speak Spanish In Your Mind

Speaking Spanish in your mind is a powerful way to learn many ways to express yourself, even if you still have a very limited vocabulary. Just imagine the conversations you are likely to have. Putting your thoughts into Spanish means you learn not just words and rules, but specific ways to express what you want to say. It is a great way to practice and remember your new language.

4. Carry An English-Spanish Dictionary

Don’t just carry it, but use it. It should be more than an emergency back-up for when you are stuck for a word. You should use it proactively to prepare for conversations. Also use it when you are stuck for a word in your imagined conversations.

Use the dictionary after conversation as well. Look for other ways you could have said something. Look up words that you heard but didn’t recognize. Randomly browse it and stop to learn the words that catch your attention.

5. Speak With Native Spanish Speakers

One of the best ways to quickly speak Spanish (or any language you want to learn) is to start talking with native speakers. Actually talking in your new language will quickly show you where you need the most work. If you can’t do this where you live, start talking as soon as you arrive in any Spanish-speaking country. You want to learn to speak Spanish in order to communicate, so start communicating.

Spanish Immersion – the Most Effective Way to Learn Spanish

This article highlights the benefits of learning Spanish by means of taking an immersion course.

If you are interested in learning Spanish, and money is no object, then the fastest and most effective way to do this is probably through Spanish immersion. There are a wide variety of programs available to people who are interested in trying this option out. They are available in many Spanish speaking countries as well as some non-Spanish speaking countries, such as the United States.

The reason that it is so effective to learn Spanish through a Spanish immersion program is that you are only allowed to speak Spanish in these programs. All of the classes are conducted in Spanish, and you are requested to only speak in the language throughout the entire program. If you are taking a course in a Spanish speaking country you are usually also placed for at least part of the program with a Spanish speaking family. This way you get to hear the language being spoken as it is normally spoken in everyday life, rather than just how it is spoken in the classroom. study spanish online

Some of these Spanish immersion programs can actually be quite affordable, but there is a wide range in prices, so those interested in giving this a try should definitely look around. Some of the programs can be very expensive. However, the more expensive programs will have some benefits that some of the less expensive programs do not.

The instructors will be more likely to have college degrees, and their may be more high tech options to supplement the classroom instruction. Usually these programs offer either one on one instruction or very small classes of less than 10 students. The extra personal attention helps make it easier to learn Spanish than it would be with larger classes that are more common in universities and schools.

While you will be going into a Spanish immersion program in order to learn Spanish, you won’t be spending all of your time in the classroom, so consider this when you choose a program and pick one near other attractions that you would like to visit during your spare time. This way you can get some extra enjoyment out of your trip as well as learning Spanish.

The shorter language immersion programs that only last for a week or two will not give you as much improvement in your language skills as the longer programs, but they will still be helpful and give you a great opportunity to use and improve on your current skills.

You will have an opportunity to enjoy the beauty Mexican tropics will offer. The flora and fauna of Mexico is so diverse that you will think you’re visiting a different planet.

Since Mexican Spanish is so distinct from other Hispanic Spanish dialects, we often refer to it simply as Mexican language. Many Mexican words are derived from ancient indigenous language, the Nahuatl. Surprisingly some Nahuatl words have made their way to English. Words that we are so accustomed to like: coyote, chilli or avocado are all derived from Nahuatl.

Of course apart from traveling to Mexico to learn Spanish you can use one of the many other tools which are at your disposal. For example a good Mexican Spanish Cd goes a long way. You will be able to subtly increase your knowledge on the subject. The Cd is good for improving pronunciation and can be used while you’re doing house chores. Another advantage you have working with such tools is mobility. If you own a laptop, you will be able to learn Mexican words wherever you are. These benefits will allow you to learn the language at your own pace and can produce significant results.

Who is to say that you can only learn the language in a brick-and-mortar facility? You probably heard about the bad grades of some of the greatest minds.

Well, that’s exactly the point, if you have passion, you are already on your way to success.
